Toshiba to base air conditioning warranty on installer expertise

Air conditioning warranties are to be based on the skill level of the unit installer

Toshiba UK has announced a major change to its air conditioning warranty scheme; going forward, warranty length will be judged on installer competency rather than on how much a customer has spent.

Manufacturers usually offer their customers a product warranty based on how much they have spent; the more a customer has paid out, the longer their warranty will be. However, Toshiba is changing the way it hands out its air conditioning warranties.

Toshiba air conditioning introduce new warranty rules

Toshiba change warranty scheme

David Dunn, the director and general manager at Toshiba Air Conditioning, said the new scheme makes more sense in “practical terms”, as the skill level of an installer could realistically have an impact on the lifespan of a unit, unlike the amount a customer spends.

Toshiba have introduced a three tier band warranty system:

  • T7 Enhanced Warranty Partners (seven year enhanced warranty) – offered to installers who are F-gas registered, have completed three Toshiba training courses relevant to air conditioning, and can produce a Toshiba commissioning sheet for approval, and maintenance reports.
  • T7 Approved Warranty Partners (seven year standard warranty) – offered to installers who are F-gas registered and have completed three Toshiba training courses relevant to air conditioning.
  • T5 Registered Installers (five year standard warranty) – offered to installers who are F-gas registered.

According to Mr Dunn, the new warranty scheme is a strategic move designed to increase industry skills and hopefully encourage installers “to raise their game by taking advantage of Toshiba’s training programme to improve their knowledge and skills”.
