Reliable York Borg Warner chiller wins competition
York R22, aged 32, wins competition for oldest operating York chiller
A York Borg Warner chiller that has been operating perfectly since 1984 has won a competition to find the oldest working York machine in the UK and Ireland.
The 32-year-old machine has been providing cooling services for a Dundee-based manufacturer since its production in the 80s. A serviceman from refrigeration contractor MARS Dundee (the company which has been servicing the antique machine for many years) said of it: “Despite its age, it is rock solid”.
The competition was held to find the oldest operating York chiller and was open for entry within the UK and Ireland. It was MARS Dundee’s York Borg Warner R422D (formally an R22 model), produced at York’s Basildon manufacturing plant in 1984, that finally won the top prize.
Jamie Marshall, from MARS Dundee, said the only problem that the company had experienced with the York R22 was the breakdown of one compressor, which was replaced “with a like-for-like unit”.
Alpesh Trivedi, product manager at Johnson Controls’ Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Spare Parts Division (which now owns the York brand and organised the competition), agreed with Mr Marshall, who said the impressive lifespan of the York machine was a testament to the “quality of the manufacture” and “regular servicing and maintenance”.
