R22 refrigerant replacement in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) costs YOU £4.5m!

The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has spent £4.5m so far on replacing an air conditioning system because the EU is banning R22 in 2015.

BIS“The costs involved were for replacing and upgrading old equipment that was no longer efficient and complying with EU legislation which bans the use of R22 refrigerant from 2015 due to its detrimental impact on the environment.”

The shock discovery has angered bloggers and the TaxPayers Alliance.

“Given the department is so quick to claim it can’t do anything because of EU rules it’s difficult to have any faith in its ability to cut EU red tap” . said Matthew Sinclair, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance

The expenditure has been caused by a repair and maintain clause in the lease of the properties it leases. The department states that it is important to have modern and cost-effective air-conditioning which provides adequate working temperatures for it’s staff.
