Mentoring scheme opens for air-conditioning industry
The second stage of the ACR industry mentoring scheme has been launched by the IoR president
The mentoring scheme for the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry began accepting mentor/mentee applications last week to coincide with National Mentoring Day.
The ACR industry mentoring scheme, named Thermentor.org, was founded by Steve Gill, IoR president and industry expert, earlier this year. The initial pilot scheme proved successful for the sector, thus leading Mr Gill to announce the second stage of the scheme which is now open for applications.
The new ‘matching period’ is open to those involved in the refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heat pump (RACHP) industry. Employers can apply to mentor an employee/mentee in the early stages of their RACHP career.
The mentoring period will begin in January 2017 and applicants have until the end of this year to apply.
Those involved in the mentoring scheme are volunteers who recognise how important it is to support young people who are just beginning their career in the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry, especially considering the demographics of the sector which suggests it is ageing and is in need of some new blood.
Steve Gill also commented on the changing face of the sector which is moving from a “work-place colleague to colleague” trend to a more independent and smaller environment, involving small companies and one-person traders.
The idea of the mentoring scheme is to encourage “knowledge transfer” which is otherwise prevented by these current industry trends.
Mr Gill said: “We have run two pilot cycles so far of twelve weeks duration each. This has involved three mentors and eleven mentees. It has been a learning curve for all of us, and we are still learning and improving the programme.”
A new website to promote the scheme is under construction. Anyone interested in applying to be a mentor or mentee should contact Steve Gill at firstname.lastname@example.org
