IoR publishes guide to new air-conditioning safety standard
New safety standards published for the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry
The Institute of Refrigeration (IoR) has published its guide for the air-conditioning and refrigeration sector concerning the new safety standard EN378 which has been released by the European Committee for Standards, CEN and published by the British Standards Institution (BIS).
The safety guide, titled ‘Refrigerating systems and heat pumps; Safety and environmental requirements’, has been published in four parts and covers around 180 pages of basic requirements and criteria.
The new BS EN378 replaces the previous air-conditioning and refrigeration safety standards which was published in 2008. The new complimentary IoR guide is designed to address the major changes that have been introduced in the new standards.
The safety guidelines act as a standard for companies involved in the design, manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance of systems used in air-conditioners, refrigeration units, heat pumps, and other similar technologies.
The IoR says the design of such systems will not be much affected by the new standards but that one of the major points is the limitations imposed on the use of A2L refrigerants, which are considered mildly flammable. According to the IoR, it will be years of testing and negotiations before these refrigerants will be more widely used.
