European Commission should consider indoor air quality
Industry associations ask the EC not to forget indoor air quality in the push for energy efficiency
A group of leading European ventilation and air conditioning associations have called on the European Commission (EC) not to neglect indoor air quality in its push to encourage energy efficient buildings.
The associations believe that driving the trend for improved energy efficiency in buildings could have a detrimental effect on indoor air quality and that this could endanger the health and wellbeing of the population.
Air conditioning and ventilation systems are important for indoor air quality
The European Heat Pump Association, European Partnership for Energy and the Environment (EPEE), the European Ventilation Industry Association, and the Federation of European HVAC Associations (REHVA), the European Building Automation and Controls Association, Eurovent, joined forces to produce the industry report for the EC.
It calls on the EC to consider the advancement of ventilation and air conditioning systems which can be controlled according to demand. An option that is environmentally aware but which also takes the health of the population into consideration.
Poor ventilation and air conditioning in a building can lead to indoor air pollution, which can be harmful to people and also decrease productivity and motivation.
The industry associations were quick to point out their support for lowering the energy consumption of buildings across Europe, however they also wanted to stress that modern construction innovations and tighter insulation has led to poor air exchange and thus poor indoor air quality, which can be tackled by installing ventilation and air conditioning systems.
The EC’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is currently being revised and the new industry paper asks for indoor air quality to be taken into consideration when creating the revised directive.
