Summer is upon is and the air conditioning season along with it. If you want to get the most out of your air conditioning system without paying through the roof for it, check out our handy tips on how to reduce usage and therefore your bill!

If you’re considering installing an air conditioning unit in your home or business premises, our first two tips can help you choose the right air con unit for your space and thus save you money!:

1) Choose an air conditioning unit based on its BTU output and the size of the area you want to cool. AC units with a higher BTU output are designed for larger spaces as they are more powerful and therefore use more electricity.

A space of 100 to 150 sq ft will require an AC unit with an output of 5,000 BTUs per hour; for a space covering 1,500 to 2000 sq ft you’re going to need a unit that’s capable of 30,000 BTUs per hour.

2) It’s important to purchase an air con system that has a high energy efficiency ratio (EER) rating. The EER is based on BTU output and wattage input. AC units with a higher EER will save you a significant amount of money each month on your electric bill.

3) A regular clean of your air conditioning unit filter will result in better efficiency as the dirt and dust that begins to collect will cause your AC to work harder.

We recommend hiring a professional to clean your AC filter once per month and to change your filter every three months. Click here to find a certified air conditioning expert to help you reduce your costs.

4) Invest in good blinds or curtains and use them on days when the sun is shining into your premises. Allowing the sun to glare in through the windows causes your property to become like a greenhouse, which means your air conditioning will have to do more work to cool down your home or business.
